Steven and I stayed in St. Augustine last week for both business and pleasure reasons (which is more like pleasure and pleasure reasons). The highlight of the trip for me was getting to climb the St. Augustine Light House.

The building came forth right away, strongly, with a personality and presence that could not be ignored:

I haven't always believed that things can have a soul...but with structures like these, with their history and their aliveness...they change my mind.

And then you reach the top...

LOVE vs FEAR

I always feel rejuvenated when I do a bit of personal work...just for me.

That being said, since natural light is always my favorite for portraits I wanted to see what I can achieve with constant light in studio. See for yourself...

I shot the image below with two constant video lights placed at 45 degrees of my subject on each side of her.

And for the personal aspect of things I wanted to play with emotions and feelings. A lot of my spiritual work lately has been around understanding feelings and self reflection. So I did a "controversial" themed set of two images contrasting each other with the title FEAR vs LOVE

When reduced to a basic feeling fear and love are the two main motivators for our everyday decisions. We make choices to either prevent certain things from happening (fear) or in order to determine things we want to happen. Examining the place from which you operate (fear or love) can bring about an interesting personal controversy.

I enjoy offering my clients a variety of options when it comes to the lighting used for their head-shots as well as their wardrobe and looks. Here is an example of two different light set-ups. At the top, the ever complimenting natural light is soft and very revealing in the eyes and skin tone. I added a regular house lamp behind the model to give her a more dramatic effect. The middle shot is achieved solely with window light. And below you can see the studio set-up, a large diffused soft-box at 45 degrees gives a more formal look and extra large highlights in her eyes.

So I felt blessed when I got to photograph a model like Marva...Marva has fashion running through her veins and she adores being in front of the camera. Renee Lipsey, local wardrobe stylist and good friend of mine brought her unique, hand gathered wardrobe items and we had a lot of fun pairing them with jewelry from Palmetto Fine Arts and Crafts as well as Bette Holland. I love it when an idea becomes a product. And that is the case for my friend Andrew Petersen and his idea of creating a delicious, stimulating lip gloss. I am so excited for him and his new line and I felt even more thrilled when he asked me to help him create his line ad. Model Cameron Eubanks brought her beauty, Andrew brought the gloss and I provided the studio. See for yourself what came out. p.s. I got a gloss for myself from Andrew, as a "photographer perk"...just so you know, it is a stimulating gloss all right!

I am always excited when I get hired for a modeling portfolio. It just allows me to bring out the model's beauty in the most creative and enhancing way. It was the case for Gabrielle, who needed some new shots for her book before heading to Charleston Fashion Week castings. To give it an even more real fashion feel I contacted my local designer friends and borrowed some of their gorgeous creations for the shoot. Thus, the gown and head pieces from Kyra Elizabeth Designs , the jewelry from Palmetto Fine Arts and Crafts, scarves from Sevya, make-up by the super talented Jonny Sherwood allowed me to create several different looks for her and photograph both in studio and in natural light. With photography by yours truly we got these results:

A Fascination With Water...

I have been so busy lately I haven't really had the chance to work on any of my personal projects, which makes me both grateful and a bit sad at the same time. I had started last year a Water project of which I am still very much attached. These first shots are taken in natural light except for the one where the model is standing in falling water. It's been a lot of fun to work with this element and I have tried as much as possible to avoid the generic, now overused, underwater theme. I am currently looking for models interested in working with this concept so contact me if you'd like to collaborate.

Rhonda is a beautiful and successful interior designer from San Francisco, who has recently extended her work to Charleston. I was flattered when she chose me to photograph her for her new bio page.

"I don't want a generic head-shot" she said, "I want people to get a sense of who I am first".

I love this approach! Her calm, peaceful face did in pictures the same thing it did in person: instill of sense of security and trust. I hope other professionals borrow this idea, of allowing a photographer to capture them outside of "the office", or the standard cold feel of a "professional photograph". In the end all we care about is working with someone we can trust.

By the end of the shoot Rhonda and I were friends and you can bet next time I need an interior designer, I am giving her a call.

A Perspective of Purpose

I am constantly amazed at how life always finds a way to open us up to its wonders...My heart is in a constant expansion.
When Steven became a part of my life last year I knew that would only make it better and I offer gratitude for all the blessings that have come since. Getting to share my passion for photography with my beloved has been a true gift. I didn't really get to understand the extent of that gift until recently, when I began documenting Steven's personal photography project The Churches Of America (www.TheChurchesOfAmerica.com).

Many artists inspire themselves by viewing the work of other artists or by interacting with them, but getting to see someone else dedicate their knowledge, their time, their finances and their energy to something they truly believe in is beyond inspiring!

I have joined Steven in his journey to over 20 churches now and documented his creative process both on film and in photographs. Many of the churches we got to see together are true works of art, composed of many years of sweat, ambitious refinement of detail and a tremendous dedication to grace and beauty. Many of them pulled the strings of my heart but none as much as The Orthodox Church, downtown Charleston.
I was born Orthodox and it is the most familiar faith to me. As soon as we entered the church I felt as if I stepped back into a portion of my childhood. Different kinds of incense are burnt during an orthodox service and that smell has been perfectly stored in my mind. I recognized it as soon as I walked in and felt the immediate sense of reverence and humility that I used to feel as a little girl when stepping into a church with my parents. There is such a power that a house of worship has that can permeate one's entire being.

The Orthodox Church in Charleston has an oval ceiling in the middle of which you find the giant figure of Jesus. His face appears kind and accepting almost as to invite you to get closer. And we did...

Maybe the most powerful gift I received that way was the perspective of purpose, a purpose beyond oneself, beyond "how much money am I making at this?", beyond fortune or fame but into one's choice to celebrate and perpetuate beauty, to remain in a state of awe and gratitude. Steven's mission to photograph Charleston's and this country's most beautiful churches is materializing day by day. For me, the mission of understanding and finding my own purpose started that day.

Young Actor Headshots

I have had the privilege lately to photograph a handful of very talented, very promising young actors. During our shoots there were a lot of questions arise and I wanted to address them all here as well for other aspiring actors.

Q: Should I smile in my photographs?

A: Most casting directors and agents wither go through thousand of pictures before calling you in a selective casting call or they will choose to meet you in person in order to decide if you have the features you are looking for. Your actor head-shots should absolutely reflect your personality and most importantly, your ability to go through a range of expressions. I take hundreds of photographs of each of my clients and then we go through all of them together and select the ones that represent their spirit best as well as other options.

Q: Should I have my head-shots done in a studio or in natural light?

A: I have said this before in this blog, but studio light can sometimes be unforgiving and formal. Natural light portraits simply look more natural and present you in a more honest, more approachable way. Depending on the kind of roles you and jobs are looking for, you may want to have both done in the long run, but for having your comp card updated and for a first photo-shoot I recommend having them done in natural light with at least two different back-rounds...a darker one and a lighter one.

Q: What should I wear?

A: Stay away from white and large, busy patterns. You want your head-shot to draw attention to you and not your clothes. Wear something you feel good in and are comfortable sitting in. Being uncomfortable in your clothes will make you uncomfortable in front of the camera and that won't help your pictures.

Q: Should I have make-up on or have my hair done in a special way?

A: Wear the same amount of make-up you wear on a regular basis and have your hair down allowing for it to be seen in it's full length and it's natural style. Just remember that your main goal is to show who you are. Casting directors are train to mentally add on any make-up or costume that your role will require.

Boutique Look Book

"Did you know I am an expert at fitting women in their jeans?" asked me Alain Dayan, owner and "visionaire" of Style Exchange in Town Center. If there would be a MOST PASSIONATE BOUTIQUE OWNER in CHARLESTON contest, Alain would win it. He loves what he does and you can tell. He is able to look at your body type and tell exactly which type of clothes would compliment it most in his store. Maybe that's why he has so many clients that have become his friends.
Well, you must imagine that when he came to me and told me about his look book idea for his boutique I understood immediately that even though it hasn't been done in Charleston before by a boutique, this first one would sure set up a high standard.
Within a week Alain had put together an excellent team of models and hair and make-up professionals and made it very clear that he wanted a hassle free "quick shoot". And that's what we did!
I brought my gear in, set it up and in two hours and about 20 outfits later, we were done. I edited the pictures the same night! God, I love my job!

Charleston Fashion Week- HERE WE GO!

Here's to many hours of being around all the fashion loving people tonight and for the next five days. There is a certain very exciting buzz about Charleston Fashion Week that can become addictive. Now that it's my fourth year in a row of collaborating with Charleston Magazine I can certainly say that the growth and expansion of the event is more than noticeable. I am looking forward to seeing what's in store for this year's show and to seeing all of my fashionista friends dressed to the nines!

LOVE RED

It's not a secret now that I love the color red. And my website may give some clues here and there :)
So is there a question then why I said yes immediately to being part of The Lowcountry AIDS Services project "Love Red". Each artist: photographer or painter participating is supposed to create a piece of art including the color red. Steven Hyatt of Imaging Arts shared with me the extraordinary opportunity to photograph inside the Unitarian church which is being restored and which had that one day with no pews.

It's a new day, it's a new intern

I have been keeping Katie around for about six months now, she's come to almost every photo-shoot and assisted me at all major projects. "She's good" whispered one of my friends while admiring Katie's pieces in Imaging Arts' "What is Charleston to you?" show. And I figured it's time to make it official and let the world know that Katie Baldwin is now officially my one and only intern! And I have to admit, she's an asset! Anticipates needs, gets there early, screws up very rarely but enough to make me grateful for all the other times she gets it right, plays along with my silly jokes and can carry and set-up equipment. In the famous words of Diana Deaver: she's hired! Check out her bio and pics below and see for yourself. Looking at her work, I sadly recognize that she will probably have her own intern in now time and I'll try hard not to consider her competition :)

Katie is from a small town in North Carolina. She started photography by taking black and white film classes in high school and continued them through college. She graduated in May with a BA in Photography and Digital Imaging from Virginia Intermont College. Right after graduation, Katie moved to Charleston and called Diana. She intended to set up a time to meet, instead she invited her to a shoot happening in a few hours. Katie has been working with Diana ever since and has yet to look back.

Pure Joy!

There are such simple things in life that bring pure joy! This time it happened surrounded by adorably beautiful animals. DC. Brock Sauls of Southside Animal Hospital provided the bliss when he asked me to travel to a beautiful piece of land on John's Island where he could "let the dogs out". I cannot explain how much love, joy and silliness I witnessed that afternoon. Even the horses were fooling around fighting for Brock's attention. The excitement of being of his three puppies was intoxicating! Check it out for yourself in the video below, and don;t be afraid to hire a professional to capture the love between you and your "best friend".

I took this shot at around 11 pm on Folly Beach as part of a series that will be presented at Imaging Arts in October as part of a collective show with other local photographers called DEADication. This show is Halloween themed and thus the concept of this shoot was meant to capture the ethereal, ghostly feeling of all things we can't explain. It was a 25 second exposure and the model was painted in by flashing a flashlight at different times during her walk/dance. The image below is completely unedited.

I was so honored recently when a dear friend of mine, actor and model Dan Boland contacted me and asked me to help revamp his head-shot portfolio. I enjoy actor head-shots because they allow me to coach my subjects and encourage them to be as expressive as possible. Dan really went all out and provided me with a with a wide range of emotions and expressions which in turn will serve him well in his portfolio. It is always exciting to see someone talented let go and demonstrate their skill!

An incredible story and the third cover in six months...

What started as a portrait assignment is finally in my hands as the cover of College of Charleston Magazine, a magazine distributed to over 20 000 homes. It seems like the Gods smiled over this assignment as Alfred Hall from the College agreed to give me "creative freedom" over Meagan's portrait. I read her story and was immediately touched. Meagan is an incredible dancer despite her recent mind boggling hearing disabilities. I had to photograph her dancing!!! there was no way around that. I needed a flowy dress to help me with the visual description of her movements. There was one designer in town that came to mind right away: Rachel Gordon. her dresses are elegant, feminine and ...flowy. I called her and she agreed to make something for my photo-shoot...in three days. Once everything got together the results were so beautiful. I am so grateful for being given the opportunity, tools and support to create what I love most!

I had the pleasure to work with Anna Lassiter and Lucinda Race last year in a photoshoot meant to capture their most recent fashion designs. The photoshoot was a lot of fun in itself and the images have since been featured in Charleston Fashion Week and the Eden Boheme store where you can actually find both of their creations. Recently Art Magazine did a beautiful feature on the two designers and my photographs were once again featured. So exciting!

Whether it's time for you to update your modeling portfolio or you just want some pretty pictures of yourself, it's important that they reflect who you are. That's where my job comes in. I believe that anyone's portrait should reflect a part of who they are everyday and also a part of the unknown in them. I love to meet with my clients at least a week before the shoot, sit down and talk about who they are. It's an amazing opportunity to discover the real beauty, the inside one. We all want to look good in pictures but the truth is the best photos are those in which you get a glimpse of the inner beauty, those where you see into the soul as well as glimpse its outer shell.

Starting your modeling portfolio...

I had a great time on Saturday with Mieke when we shot her modeling portfolio. I had an interview with Mieke and her mother a while back and we talked about her goals and which side of modeling she was most fit for. We looked at pictures and decided which of her features to focus on. I wanted to help with her exposure so I decided to incorporate warbrobe from some of the best designers in town. We used White Bridal Salon on Daniel Island, Anna Lassiter' creations with the Anna Boheme line. This was Mieke's first photoshoot!!! She did a great job!!

Recently Diana Deaver photography has begun a beautiful collaboration with the College of Charleston Magazine. In their most recent issue I had the pleasure of photographing a gorgeous model and person: Breanne Riggs. I am very excited that the magazine chose to do a full page feature using the photograph I took of Breanne.

Besides having eyes that take your breath away, Breanne was sweet, easy to work with and very down to Earth. The article that accompanied her photograph also speaks about her incredible intelligence and her worldwide experience with modelling.

I chose Rembrandt lighting for her portrait because I wanted to show a non glamour, honest side of her and allow her inner beauty to speak as loudly as her outer one.

Do you ever ask your dentist to accept home made cookies instead of payment for your root canal? Do you go to your attorney and offer them a pair of shoes as trade for their services?

I have been asked lately to do an unusual number of trades or free jobs both by friends and people I barely know. And while I am very grateful for the opportunity I cannot help wonder what makes it ok for certain professionals to be treated with less respect than others. It is true that I didn't go to med school or law school but I did spend many nights trying to understand how Photoshop works and my photography equipment costs more than any attorney will ever have to pay for his suit or office desk. I am a business owner, with bills and costs and most importantly the necessity to eat a meal three times a day. And while cookies and shoes are all fine things to have, they are currently not accepted as a form of payment by SCE&G.

So please, next time you feel like you really would like to have a product or a service someone offers, whether is having your house cleaned, having your lawn mowed or having your portrait taken, consider offering that professional the same respect you give any other. They will honor you back and provide you with the kind of service you really need. Plus, some day, you may be in the same situation....

One of the things I heard during the launch of The Sensuality Project was that I chose really pretty, skinny subjects for my project. And while that is true it is not because I don't think plus models are not sexy or sensual but because I didn't know anyone who is a plus size and feels comfortable in front of the camera. Well, I do now! Marva Brown, a gorgeous, confident and sensual plus model contacted me and we had a photo shoot this past weekend. I was inspired by the recent curve loving trend in V magazine. These are two of my favorite pictures that came out:

Thursday night The Sensuality Project had its opening at Torch and over 150 people showed up to see my most recent work. I was both overwhelmed and grateful for amazing support. Most importantly I felt an incredible sense of responsibility when someone asked...what is it going to be next...how are you going to top that?...

The truth is I'm not...not for a while anyway. I am going to take it slow, continue to study light and learn photography tricks and when another opportunity arises I will create another project that will entails just as much passion, dedication and hard work as this one did.

I have to admit that without my amazing team of interns, friends and supporters this project could not have come to life. I am grateful to them every day.

Your Professional Head-shot

Your professional head-shot is very important for the web first impression, your work portfolio, your book that is being published or as part of a business group. Recently I have had the pleasure of working with many professionals who wanted to update and improve their website and hired me to help with the pictures. I have put together a list of questions and answers about what your photo-shoot should be like:

What should I wear at the photo-shoot? Wear simple colors that compliment your skin. Avoid large patters or complicated fabrics that can distract the viewer. Some people ask me whether they should wear a suit or a shirt...the answer is always: whatever you usually wear when you meet your clients...something that you love, that makes you feel confident and prepared for a business meeting.

Should I be smiling or be serious? It depends on the type of business you are in and how you want your clients to perceive you. I encourage my clients to be themselves in front of the camera, and during the photo-shoot I ask them questions and try to get them to relax and be pleasantly engaged. We take a lot of pictures and pick the best together. Ultimately when you post your picture and biography you want your future clients to find out who you are, what you stand for and how you are going to treat them. If you smile a lot then your head-shot should reflect that. It should be a good representation for the person that is going to shake their hand when they walk into your office.

Should I have my hair and make-up professionally done? This is a delicate matter because the camera usually diminishes make-up by 40%. If you wear make-up on a regular basis then you should have it done a bit more intensely than usual for the photo-shoot. Since I was trained to do make-up for the camera a lot of my clients choose to hire me to take care of that. And for the hair I think that having it freshly washed and styled (even at your favorite salon that usually cuts your hair) goes very far in giving you that extra bit of confidence to be in front of the camera. After all, your picture should ideally be taken in a good hair day :)

Should I take the picture in a studio, outdoors or in my office?

The type of business you are in makes a difference in how I would answer this question. Natural light is very complimenting to skin tones and when used right it can reveal your best facial features. I also think a head-shot taken outdoor can portray you as friendly and approachable. A studio head-shot can appear very formal but that might be exactly what you're looking for especially if you are a beauty product supplier for instance. You should not have your head-shot taken at your office unless you are looking for a biographical portrait- where you are being portrait in your work environment. I recommend a biographical portrait when it is important to you to present your product, your brand or the location in which you work.

Ultimately, keep in mind that your head-shot is supposed to encourage anyone to contact you, do business with you. It is supposed to be inviting and friendly.

Introducing The Sensuality Project

Today was the second to last day of shooting for The Sensuality Project...the newest and most exciting photography project I have started in 2010. The idea behind this came from hearing people talk about their bodies....we can be pretty hard on ourselves sometimes. We all have something we don't like about the way we look but the truth is we also do have something we like...So I have asked each of the people participating in my project to name their favorite thing about their bodies: hair, eyes.. waist...whatever it may be, and then created a photoshoot around that.

Today I shot with Monica Compton and Chelsie Ravenel and his beautiful girlfriend Jordan. It was my first time shooting with Monica...WOW! She is amazing and gorgeous! Chelsie and Jourdan were incredibly sweet and loving...I feel so blessed. So far everyone who has been photographed for my project has been professional, sweet and incredibly sexy! It's interesting to see what all you start noticing when you're focusing on seeing the beauty in people!

Hello everyone and thank you for visiting my blog...I am excited to have started one. It is my new tool to keep everyone updated with my current projects and photoshoot results. And since it's the beginning of the year I thought we should start with a recap of 2009 successes. Diana Deaver Photography was featured during Pecha Kucha, participated in Charleston Fashion Week, was published in Skirt, Post and Courier, Charleston Magazine, The Post and Courier, The Preview and City Paper and had an exclusive night of art and good food at Oak Steakhouse where VERTEX, Diana's bridge project was presented for the first time. Diana also started teaching at the Charleston Center for Photography in 2009 and had her first lecture there in December where she presented her recent trip to Italy.
